{"id":258,"date":"2010-11-18T13:32:58","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T18:32:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cyrussamii.com\/?p=258"},"modified":"2010-11-18T13:35:17","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T18:35:17","slug":"tabarrok-on-false-findings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyrussamii.com\/?p=258","title":{"rendered":"Tabarrok on false findings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Related to my previous post, I followed a link from Chris Blattman&#8217;s blog (<a href=\"http:\/\/chrisblattman.com\/\">link<\/a>) to the Marginal Revolution blog where Alex Tabarrok had posted a great discussion of &#8220;false findings&#8221; in science (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marginalrevolution.com\/marginalrevolution\/2005\/09\/why_most_publis.html\">link<\/a>). \u00a0The post was from 2005, and it was triggered by John Ioannidis&#8217;s now well-known paper on &#8220;why most published research findings are false&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1182327\/?tool=pubmed\">link<\/a>). \u00a0Tabarrok proposes that economics may be in less worse shape because economics hypotheses tend to be better motivated by theory than the type of atheoretical &#8220;see what sticks&#8221; hypothesis testing that seems, from a casual glance, to characterize other literatures. \u00a0 <!--more-->I&#8217;m not sure how one might assess Tabarrok&#8217;s claim on that one, but there is a line in his post that I really, really like:\u00a0&#8220;Trust empirical papers which test other people&#8217;s theories more than empirical papers which test the author&#8217;s theory.&#8221; \u00a0I think this is spot on. \u00a0Alas, publishing and presentation standards in my discipline, political science, seem to punish people who take such an approach.
